From the Domestic Violence Committee: Re Orders of Protection and Firearms

Congresswoman Lois Capps (D-Cal) Introduces Domestic Violence Survivors Protection Act - Mar 18, 2013 - This legislation would rectify this inequality by extending federal firearms prohibitions on individuals subject to a domestic violence restraining order to dating partners.
Apparently there is some federal firearms prohibition on the books now BUT DOES COVER ALL DV RESTRAINIG ORDERS..

Here it is - from Wikipedia: The Domestic Violence Offender Gun Ban ("Gun Ban for Individuals Convicted of a Misdemeanor Crime of Domestic Violence", Pub.L. 104–208,[1] 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(9)[2]) is an amendment to the Omnibus Consolidated Appropriations Act of 1997 enacted by the 104th United States Congress in 1996, which bans access to firearms by people convicted of crimes of domestic violence. The act is often referred to as "the Lautenberg Amendment" after its sponsor, Senator Frank Lautenberg (D - NJ).

Apparetnly the problem is that even though this act exists on the books, it is rarely used by the courts across the land.
